 1st International Summit Against Prohibition
« Thread Started on Feb 12, 2008, 9:55pm »

Good evening and gentlemen. As you know, some of us have been having discussions with a number of our European neighbours and transatlantic chums from America and Canada with a view to organising the 1st International Conference Against Prohibition. As it will take us some time to generate the income required to organised a full-blown international conference, we are, nevertheless, going to hold a smaller preliminary summit meeting which will be called The First International Summit Against Prohibition. This summit will be predominantly for organisations and national representatives and its aims will be:

a) to form an international coalition of organisations to fight prohibition; and

b) to work together to develop the conference which we hope will be held in the autumn.

1) This summit will be held in Amsterdam on the 2nd and 3rd of May (Friday and Saturday).

2) Participants will be expected to arrive in Amsterdam on the 1st May (Thursday) and be there by early evening in order to have a preliminary get-together in readiness for the next two days. People will leave on Sunday 4th.

3) As I have explained, this summit is firstly aimed at organisations and national representatives and as there is at least 1 organisation in the Ireland (this one) then I would hope that at least 6 people will make a big effort to attend. People will fund their own journeys and accommodation.

4) At the moment, we are in the process of establishing an appropriate venue and we shall let you know about this as soon as we have decided.

5) So, come on, let's get busy. We are hoping to have a number of European organisations present from the hospitality, entertainment and other industries and maybe one or two transatlantic link ups by TV and phone. We intend to send a very clear message to our politicians that we are becoming fed up with the smoking bans and the damage they are causing to many people's lives and livelihoods. Coupled with coming alcohol prohibition and the damage that that will also cause this should be a very animated summit. Lastly, add to that the formulation of an international coalition and we should put in place an organisation which is going to become very strong and powerful indeed!

We must have Irish representatives, so come on, best feet forward ladies and gentlemen. Never let it be said that in the face of oppression the best the Irish can do is blog! :)

Thank you for the support Emma and no-one can work miracles. However, there must be some who can make the time. So far, it looks like we have representation from: England, Wales, Scotland, USA, Germany, Holland, Austria, Italy, France, Switzerland and Denmark - although in precisely what numbers we don't know yet (quite a few per country we hope). However, as you can see, we have to have our Irish friends on board too, so please roll up ladies and gentlemen. After what you have suffered there comes a time when you have to give yourselves the chance to kick arse!

Good, a nice positive reply, Mark. That's what I like to hear and it would be really nice to have a at least two or three more Irish representatives.

Okay, in response to your question: who is organising the event?

The answer is a combination of Forces Holland, Forces International, Freedom to Choose, Freedom to Choose Scotland, Forces Germany, Sleepwalk Prison and Dary - Denmark.

We are presently attempting to organise a package to make it easier on everyone's pocket. This has not been easy as Amsterdam is a very popular place, but, we hope it will be on an old rigger sailing ship which will sail about too as the Summit happens. However, we have not finalised the details on that point - so fingers crossed.

I shall keep everyone posted as I know more.

Its for certain after all the posts that many here could care less about other peoples rights to belong in a public or private place. Then we have many here who agree that liberty and rights should never be prohibitied or regulated...........Even if it were sound science behind the shs debate""which it is not"" people would still smoke and they will always do it regardless of what others think.....Now I suggest each of you sit back and read about PROHIBITION in america and around the world.........I bet ya you have a whole diferent opinion after you take in how much trouble prohibition causes society in general.............here is the facts...........no prohibition has ever suceeded in working either voluntarily or forced...........many have died because of prohibition and many law abiding citizens found themselves victims of tyrannical prohibitionists at many times in our nations history............where a prohibitionists feels they are right and morally justified in what they do...........the victimized side feels they are the agrieved party and cant even understand why they are being targeted and criminalized.......but the deaths always start when either high taxation or outright prohibition causes supply demands to compel real criminals to make money at what was a very legal right.
so I say again repeating history is not worth lives lost taxes or the criminalization of your momma you brother your kids your neighbors.............mutual respect for the rights of others from both sides will be the best lesson learned here from history..........save a life and respect the rights of others and yourself.........compromise is a better deal than
guns and mobsters

Right! Glad you posted, Mark, because I can now release some more details. We are now in the final stage of negotiations to hire an entire ship for the Summit, named the "Albebaran" (it's an old clipper ship). In addition, if we get a full compliment for the sleeping on the Aldebaran of 29 (some Dutch organisational representatives will be coming on and off during the day so there will be more than 29 at the Summit, we hope) then the cost for 3 nights for full board per person excluding evening meals will be around 200 Euros, 250 Euros if we don't get the full compliment. If we run out of accommodation on the Aldebaran, then there will be a further 4 or 5 births on Wiel Maessen of Forces Holland's boat as well.

As I have also explained this is a pre-conference Summit and aimed at forming an international coalition of organisations and national representatives against prohibition. We know, for example, the Dutch Coffee Shops Association is interested in joining in and there are 3 or 4 UK organisations interested in sending reps too, plus the Italians, Germans, Danes and French plus one Swiss person and one American.

Yes, I realise the flights are not so cheap that time, and for the reasons you say, but I think the accommodation cost IS reasonable. Moreover, if you would only be coming for one night that would reduce your costs substantially. I shall add, it really is important we have two or three Irish representatives as you are an important country with regard to the ban. Also, if things go well, and we see no reason for them not to, then the enthusiasm and inspiration that someone like yourself will take back to Ireland is essential to motivate and encourage others.

Hope the details of this post meet with your approval.

Would love to make it, but it's at a bad time. I'm a teacher and it's right during finals.

Unfortunetly this is really bad timing for me due to a number of work related projects. I wish all those involved every success. Please do keep us posted on progress.
