It's official the irish spend more on food and alcohol than they do on food. According to the central statistics office the irish spent €6.2bn on food products while the spent €7.1bn on alcohol and €2bn on cigarettes. All the nanny starters must be choking on their muesli reading these figures ;D

The spend on tobacco and cigarettes is actually much larger. The €2bn in this report only records the sales made through legitimate channels in Ireland and does not include those sold on the black market or imported by holiday makers and those stocking up abroad. This would be at least another €1 billion
