Is the irish president unelected ?

I saw a graphic on the sadireland website which mentions about an unelected irish president. Can anyone explain as my work buddy fresh from dublin insists ireland elects its president by peoples vote.

Yeah, there was another viable candidate called dana who had said she favoured allowing choice on the smoking ban issue. However she needed the support of opposition parties to get a nomination and they colluded against her to prevent that happening. An so the mother superior of the nanny state mary mccaleese is living it up at our expense for another seven years
