The Ugly Face Of Health Fascism
Irish businessman Phillip Tobin last week declared his hatred of smoking and justified his ‘No smokers need apply’ advertisement for a telesales job in his company by claiming smokers were not intelligent enough to meet his standards. He was afforded time on national radio to slurry, vilify and insult this group of people and encourage other businesses to follow his example and not employ smokers.
Had Mr Tobin singled out some other group for such discrimination and attack such as gays, lesbians, foreign nationals, native Irish speakers, or left handed hurlers for that matter, the outcry from politicians, trade unions, journalists and media would have been tumultuous. However defending smokers against discrimination is not trendy in the 'pc' world and hence a deafening silence from the nation's custodians of civil liberty and freedom !
Were Albert Einstein alive today he would have fell foul of Mr Tobin’s contempt. Einstein, one of the greatest geniuses to have lived, a man passionate about his love of tobacco and a member of the Montreal Pipe Smokers Club, he would have fell very short of Mr Tobin’s intelligence requirements.
Mr Tobin’s views would have found favour with a certain German corporal who shared his contempt and disdain for Einstein and smokers. The German corporal harboured notions of a world dominated by the pure in body and spirit. As he demonised those he deemed unfit and inferior, the good and the wise remained silent and found excuses to appease the angry little man with one testicle.
Just what has been learnt from the struggles of the last century against tyrannical oppression and prejudice if at the beginning of this century we now find a new group of people to marginalise, ostracise and bully into submission for ‘the greater good’ ? How easily those that trumpet the values of liberal democracies and the rights of the individual are seduced by the growing wave of world health oppression and associated propaganda. Haven’t we learnt anything from the past and the dangers from those that would impose on us their values for our own good ?
Any society that can kick the elderly onto the streets with the smug glee that accompanied the smoking ban is a society heading in a very dangerous direction. The issues go far and beyond smoking. However, should the smoking ban be tolerated then who’s pleasure will be next !
“No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs” - “No Smokers, No Drinkers, No Gamblers” Heil Health !
